Managing Vineyard Topography and Seasonal Variability to Improve Grape Quality and Vineyard Sustainability

Topography may induce variability in meteorological conditions at the meso-scale level and could influence grape quality. Understanding impact of topography on ripening allows for development sustainable management practices that include topographical influences their consideration. This is also important applying proactive strategies able to counter expected changes climate. study was conducted cv. Nebbiolo vineyards North-West Italy. The topographic traits were performed 17 within region, which had previously been identified as belonging different terroir units. An analysis historical data series carried out characterize units from point view. composition investigated during 2012 2013. Based traits, a Cluster Analysis classified into four groups. Differences among groups mainly concerned insolation heat accumulation. influenced individual components quality differently depending seasonal weather trend. Interactions between vintage observed few parameters. Better understanding grapevine reaction external factors/site characteristics can allow improved site season-specific decision making contribute improving vineyard sustainability while maintaining winery objectives wine typicity.
